The Stitching Scientist

    The Reversible Hobo Bag

    Bags· Free Pattern

    9 Aug

I have an obsession with bags and purses, so when I saw this tutorial, I knew I had to make this bag. I picked up these fabrics at the scraps section at Walmart for a whooping $4! That’s $4 for both 1/2 yard pieces of coordinating fabric. One is a blue and brown calico print and the other is a light weight chambray. I checked out some Etsy shops and these bags are going for almost $30-45. You can make one for yourself in just under an hour without breaking your accessory budget.

I found this great tutorial and free pattern at verypurpleperson.  The instructions were very simple and straight forward with nicely colored illustrated instructions, which goes a long way for beginners like myself.

The bag ended up measuring about approximately 15″ wide by 10″ from bottom to opening. I am 5’2″ and the length fits nicely under my arm. If you want it larger, all you need to do is push back the pattern a few inches or however larger you want it from the fold and the bottom of the fabric. You can also embellish this hobo with a flower (if you are planning on wearing it on one side primarily). There is no closure since its a reversible pattern, but again, if you are planning on using it on one side, you can add a magnetic closure. You can also add pockets to the bag. Before sewing the pieces together, sew pockets on the right sides of whichever fabric you want your pocket to be. You can’t see if in these pictures but I also used a bright color tread in the bobbin when I topstitched so that it is highlighted on the outer edges of the bag. It’s a simple compliment to this already wonderful design.

It was a nice afternoon sewing getaway for me:-). I enjoyed making this bag. Now off to the mall to show it off!
