I decided to do an Elmo skirt for my daughter’s birthday. I wanted something girly that would twirl with her little body. After looking at a few designs, I fell in love with the double layer circle skirt. Having never sewn before, I was extremely intimidated, but in love with this design. I came across MADE blog by Dana during my search for a good tutorial. I enjoyed Dana’s simplistic approach for beginners. Her tutorials are very well written with clear pictures, which goes a long way for amateurs like myself.
After a week of fabric hunting and late nights of sewing, I was done! My very first sewing project.
I followed all the steps outlined in her tutorial except the waist band. I found it simpler to fold over the top and pull through an elastic instead of doing the wide elastic as Dana did with hers. I also found it really difficult to hem the bottom of the circles. Since I didn’t have a serger, I decided to do bias tape on the bottom in solid coordinated colors. I got both of my fabric choices from Fabric.com. I also used a 1″ elastic waist band instead of the 2″ Dana used with her skirt.
I think this came out just darling and I can’t wait to show my daughter off in it!
